TCML - Osaka Bentencho Promotes Taiwan’s Multicultural Heritage with Students
A paper-cutting artwork featuring the character “春” (Spring), symbolizing the welcoming of spring and the blessing of good fortune, and a cup of fragrant Oriental Beauty tea allowed people in Osaka to experience Taiwan’s unique multicultural character through language, traditional crafts, and taste.
The Taiwan Center for Mandarin Learning – Osaka Bentencho, which has been approved by the Overseas Community Affairs Council (OCAC), participated in “I-House de Multicultural Experience 2026,” organized by the Osaka International House on August 1. Principal Chen Ju-Yen and teacher Peng Sheng-Yuan led students to the Tennoji Community Center in Osaka City, where they conducted two hands-on cultural activities featuring Taiwanese paper cutting and Hakka tea culture.
The event brought together participants from Taiwan, Malaysia, India, the United States, Spain, Myanmar, Vietnam, the Philippines, and other countries and regions. Through food, music, dance, handicrafts, and language exchange, the event showcased the distinctive characteristics of different cultures and attracted many local residents. TCML used Mandarin as the starting point for cultural exchange, incorporating traditional character paper cutting, Hakka Sour Citrus Tea, and Oriental Beauty tea. Through these activities, the center hoped to help participants not only learn the language but also gain a deeper understanding of Taiwan’s rich and diverse cultural heritage. Both sessions reached capacity shortly after registration opened, while some people who were unable to secure a spot remained at the venue to observe, demonstrating the strong interest among Japanese participants in Taiwanese culture.
The first session centered on the traditional character “春” (Spring). Participants experienced the beauty of traditional character forms through paper cutting while learning about the sentiments of welcoming spring and praying for blessings that are deeply rooted in Taiwanese festival traditions. Principal Chen Ju-Yen, who also serves as an overseas consultant to Taiwan’s Hakka Affairs Council, prepared Hakka Sour Citrus Tea and introduced how Hakka ancestors adapted to their environment, made effective use of local ingredients, and preserved food through practical wisdom developed in everyday life.
The second session focused on Oriental Beauty tea. Beginning with the tea’s distinctive honey-like aroma and stories rooted in its terroir, the session introduced the deep connection between Taiwan’s Hakka communities and the tea industry. Principal Chen Ju-Yen specially provided award-winning Oriental Beauty tea from Hsinchu County for participants to taste. Through the tea’s aroma and flavor, participants were able to appreciate the tea-making skills of Taiwanese tea farmers and the rich cultural heritage of Taiwan’s Hakka tea-growing regions. Through tea tasting, language learning, and cultural exchange, participants also came to understand that tea is more than a beverage—it embodies the profound connections between the people of Taiwan, the land, the seasons, and human relationships.
The students also drew on the Mandarin and cultural knowledge they had accumulated at the center to assist participants in small-group exchanges. By transitioning from language learners to cultural ambassadors, they not only demonstrated the results of their learning but also helped Taiwanese culture reach people overseas naturally through genuine interpersonal interaction.
Principal Chen Ju-Yen emphasized that Taiwanese culture does not have a single, uniform identity; rather, it has been shaped by diverse ethnic groups, languages, historical memories, and lived experiences. Hakka, Taiwanese, Indigenous languages, and the cultures of different communities are all integral parts of what makes Taiwan what it is.
In the future, TCML - Osaka Bentencho will continue to use Taiwanese cultures and Mandarin as a bridge, working together with teachers and students to introduce Japanese society to Taiwan’s respect for, preservation of, and appreciation for cultural diversity. Through continued exchange, the center hopes to help more people understand the diverse and profound cultural heritage of Taiwan.
TCML-大阪弁天町、受講生とともに台湾の多様な文化を発信
台湾華語・切り紙・客家茶を通じて大阪での交流を深める
春を迎え、福を招く象徴である「春」の文字をかたどった切り紙と、蜜のような香りが広がる東方美人茶。大阪の人々は、文字、工芸、味覚を通して、多様な文化が織り重なる台湾ならではの姿に触れました。
僑務委員会の審査を経て認可された「台湾華語文学習センター・大阪弁天町台湾華語教室」（以下、TCML-大阪弁天町）は、8月1日、陳洳豔（チン ジョエン）校長と彭聖元（ホウ セイゲン）講師が受講生を率いて大阪市天王寺区民センターを訪れ、大阪国際交流センター主催の「アイハウス de 多文化体験2026」に参加し、台湾の切り紙と客家茶文化をテーマとした2つの体験プログラムを実施しました。
今回のイベントには、台湾、マレーシア、インド、アメリカ、スペイン、ミャンマー、ベトナム、フィリピンなど、さまざまな国や地域が参加しました。食、音楽、舞踊、手作り体験、言語交流などを通じて、それぞれの文化の特色が紹介され、多くの来場者が体験を楽しみました。
TCML-大阪弁天町では、台湾華語を交流の出発点として、繁体字の切り紙、客家の酸柑茶、東方美人茶を組み合わせ、言葉を学ぶと同時に、台湾文化の多様な姿についてより深く知ってもらうことを目指しました。2つのプログラムはいずれも早々に定員に達し、参加枠を確保できなかった一部の来場者も会場に残って見学するなど、日本の人々の台湾文化に対する高い関心がうかがえました。
第1部では、繁体字の「春」をテーマに、切り紙を通して漢字の造形美に触れるとともに、台湾の年中行事に込められた、春を迎え福を願う気持ちを体験してもらいました。
また、台湾の客家委員会海外諮詢委員も務める陳洳豔校長は、客家の酸柑茶を用意し、客家の先人たちが環境に適応しながら地域の食材を生かし、暮らしの知恵によって食材を保存してきた文化的精神について紹介しました。
第2部では、東方美人茶を中心に、その独特な蜜香と土地の風土にまつわる物語から、台湾の客家の人々と茶産業との深いつながりについて紹介しました。
陳洳豔校長は、新竹県産で優良賞を受賞した東方美人茶を特別に用意し、参加者に味わってもらいました。茶の香りと味わいを通して、台湾の茶農家が培ってきた製茶技術や、客家の茶どころに息づく文化の奥深さを感じてもらいました。
また、お茶を味わいながら言葉を交わし交流することで、参加者は、茶が単なる飲み物ではなく、台湾の人々と土地、季節、そして人と人とのつながりを結ぶ、深い関係性を担っていることへの理解をさらに深めました。
受講生たちも、普段センターで身につけてきた台湾華語や台湾文化に関する知識を生かし、グループに分かれて参加者との交流をサポートしました。
言語を学ぶ立場から、文化発信を支える立場へ。受講生にとっては学習成果を発揮する機会となっただけでなく、実際の人と人との交流を通して、台湾文化が海外で自然に伝わっていく場にもなりました。
陳洳豔校長は、「台湾文化は一つの姿だけで語れるものではなく、異なる民族、言語、歴史の記憶、そして生活経験が重なり合って形づくられています。客家語、台湾語、原住民族の言語、そして各民族の文化は、いずれも台湾を構成する大切な一部です」と話しました。
TCML-大阪弁天町では今後も、台湾華語を架け橋として、教師と受講生がともに、日本社会に向けて、台湾が文化の違いを尊重し、守り、大切にしている姿を伝えながら、より多くの人々に台湾の多様で奥深い文化を知ってもらうための取り組みを続けていきます。
