Living in Taiwan

Human Rights Day

On World Human Rights Day, December 10th, it's a chance to reflect on Taiwan's journey toward strengthening human rights protection.

"In 1987, Taiwan ended martial law, transitioning from authoritarian rule to a more democratic society. In 1996, Taiwan held its first direct presidential election, solidifying its democratic foundations.

In 2011, Taiwan ratified the Convention on Women’s Rights, and in 2014, it signed the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, further advancing social equality."

In 2019, Taiwan made history as the first Asian country to legalize same-sex marriage, reflecting its progressive stance on LGBTQ+ rights. Most recently, in 2023, Taiwan amended the Mining Act to protect indigenous rights, furthering its commitment to justice for Indigenous Peoples.

Taiwan remains dedicated to enhancing human rights protection and continuing its reforms to ensure equality and dignity for all, firmly positioning itself as a beacon of human rights.
