TCML–Ann Arbor Chinese School Showcases Mandarin Learning Achievements Through In-School Speech and Reading Competition
The TCML–Ann Arbor Chinese School held an in-school speech and reading competition on March 20 at Martin Luther King Jr. Public Elementary School. Through stage performances, the event strengthened students’ ability to use Mandarin and enhanced their interest and motivation in learning the language in a lively and engaging way.
The competition was divided into speech and reading categories. Students at TCML–Ann Arbor were grouped into three levels based on proficiency. The reading materials were diverse and rich, including texts from Let’s Learn Mandarin, nursery rhymes, self-introductions, or scripts co-written with teachers. The administrative team also efficiently announced the results via email on the same evening. Director Yeh Liu Kun encouraged students, expressing hope that after this competition, everyone would become more familiar with Mandarin and apply it in daily conversations with family and friends. Principal Wang Zhen Hui thanked all participating students and parents, hoping that through this wonderful competition, enthusiasm and interest in learning Mandarin would be further enhanced.

To help adult students gain confidence in speaking on stage, four TCML teachers incorporated pronunciation, intonation, and speech content into their lessons over the past three weeks in preparation for the competition. Amy D. Seetoo, Secretary-General of the Michigan Humanities Association, also attended the event and expressed high praise for the students’ dedicated preparation and confident performances, encouraging everyone to continue improving their Mandarin proficiency.

The winning students of this competition will represent TCML–Ann Arbor Chinese School in the Michigan Mandarin Schools Association Inter-School Speech and Reading Competition to be held on May 2. They will exchange experiences and learn from Mandarin schools and adult Mandarin learners from across Michigan, striving to bring honor to their school and achieve even better results.
