TCML-I Fly Young Chinese School Hosts Taiwan Cultural Harmony in Motion
Located in Northern California's San Francisco Bay Area, the TCML - I Fly Young Chinese School, in collaboration with the Culture Center of Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in San Francisco (Milpitas) (OCAC), hosted the "Harmoney in Motion" Taiwan Traditional Culture and Enrollment Experience Event.
Featuring traditional instrument showcases, vibrant Indigenous dances, brain-teasing puzzle games, and interactive family-friendly cultural booths, the event attracted numerous families from diverse ethnic backgrounds. Amid laughter and joy, the event deepened the local community's appreciation of Taiwanese culture and Mandarin education.
"Music and Joy" in Daily Life
From DIY Moon Lutes to Reimagining the Suona, Principal Selena Shan of I Fly Young Chinese School noted that the school presents its cultural experiences each year through real-life themes—such as food, clothing, housing, transportation, education, and entertainment.
This event, the spotlight was placed on "music and fun" (a play on the character 樂, which represents both music and joy), cleverly integrating the concepts of music, entertainment, and shared joy. In addition to student performances on traditional instruments, the event highlighted Taiwan’s unique instrument, the Yueqin (Moon Lute). Attendees enjoyed assembling their own DIY models, experiencing the beauty of the instrument through both sound and touch.
Cultural Heritage Breaking Stereotypes
The event showcased performances on the suona, erhu, and guzheng. Principal Shan highlighted that the suona is not limited to traditional solemn ceremonies; it shines in festive celebrations and seamlessly fuses with modern genres like jazz, demonstrating the dynamic vitality of traditional instruments.
Edutainment for Family Bonding
The experience area featured traditional folk games like Chinese yo-yo, shuttlecock kicking, and stilt walking. Indoors, visitors experienced Mahjong and new logic-based board games. Principal Shan pointed out that Mahjong serves as a great tool to train math and logical thinking. Paired with conceptual games combining card play and tic-tac-toe, parents and children strengthened their bonds through fun, competitive play.
